RAF Kinloss

RAF Kinloss was officially handed over to the army in July 2012 and is now called Kinloss Barracks.

RAF Kinloss was home of the Mighty Hunter the nimrod MR2 which was retired in March 2010. Under the Strategic Defence Review the Nimrod MRA4 was cancelled.  RAF Kinloss was therefore no longer required as a Main Operating Base and closed as an RAF unit.   Routine flying operations at Kinloss ceased on 31 July. However, there remains a current defence requirement for the airfield to act as a Relief Landing Ground (Emergency) for RAF Lossiemouth GR4 aircraft. The airfield continues to be used by the Moray Flying Club and No 663 VGS. Further work is now taking place to determine if a longer term requirement for the airfield remains.

Kinloss Barracks are now home to 39 Engineer Regiment, an Air Support Engineer Regiment, and part of the Corps of Royal Engineers. Around 720 personnel and 200 families from 39 Engineer Regiment will relocate to Kinloss from Waterbeach, nr Cambridge.

Kinloss is situated on the Moray Coast, approximately 3 miles from the small town of Forres and 27 miles from the main busy city of Inverness. Elgin, 12 miles from Kinloss, has three large supermarkets, and many high street stores.

The nearest health centre and dentists for dependants are situated in the town of Forres and the nearest A&E department is in the town of Elgin. Kinloss has one primary school, which feeds into the secondary school in Forres. There are also other primary schools in the Forres area and a Roman Catholic primary school and two secondary schools in Elgin. A regular bus service operates between Elgin and Forres.
